“The food bank supports me a lot because my house rent is too much.”
We recently heard this from Mary, one of our Food Bank clients. But this is also the reality for many others in HRM.
Some of the most vulnerable people in our community rely on our Food Bank. Single mothers, newcomers, seniors, and those who are unhoused depend on us to help keep their costs down.
“Honestly, it’s expensive,” Mary says. “Food is expensive. But I come to the food bank to support myself because I’m working 20 hours each week. The food bank supports me to take care of myself and my baby.”
Mary is a mother of a 4-month-old child. She heard about our Food Bank through her roommate. Every three weeks, she walks through the food bank, picking out the groceries she needs for herself and her baby.
Pasta, cereal, milk, and formula are some of the staples she brings home. It’s how she can afford her other needs for another month.
Mary is grateful for the help she receives from our Food Bank. She also uses the free laundry facilities to help with her monthly expenses.
“Rent is expensive,” Mary told us, “but a place like this supports me a lot. The acceptance, the love, the understanding here from the staff is very, very welcome. I really appreciate them.”
Right now, over 2,000 people rely on our Food Bank, including 600 children. They know we are here to help.
And we can't help without you.
Your support keeps food on our shelves, so mothers like Mary can keep food on her table.
Thank you. Your caring gift means someone like Mary will have the basics they need to get through another day.
Most sincerely,
Lisa Harrison
