Keynote Speaker: Orlando Bowen
A message from Orlando:
"WOW! Brunswick Street Mission is powerfully aligned with my heart and the ‘spirit of their work’ is connected to the reason we take young people into the community to serve by feeding those in need and by building homes for those without.
When it comes to serving and making a difference by pouring into the lives of those in need, Brunswick Street Mission powerfully embodies that and galvanizes others to do what they can with what they have. They are an example of what it means to lead by example and to lose oneself in the spirit of service to our fellow human beings.
On the Brunswick Street Mission's website, they mention that a common element amongst those they serve is the daily struggle, and a future which seems not to hold much promise or joy. Please allow me to say this - by virtue of the way they show up for those they serve Brunswick Street Mission disrupts the common element and positions others to do the same. They are the light, the possibilities and the hope for a better tomorrow. They do it through a spirit of Umoja which means Unity; Do what you can - with what you have - where you can - and encourage others to do the same.”
Orlando Bowen was a linebacker in the CFL from 2000-04. He began his career with the Toronto Argonauts and ended it while playing for the Hamilton Tigercats. His career was sadly cut short after a severe concussion suffered at the hands of two corrupt police officers. In 2004, while waiting to meet friends while in a parking lot, Orlando was approached by two undercover officers who accused him of dealing drugs. The officers then physically beat Bowen who suffered significant injuries to the head. Bowen was acquitted of any wrongdoing, and just one month before the acquittal, one of the officers was arrested and charged with possessing and trafficking cocaine.
Orlando’s mission is to make a difference in the lives of others by motivating people to take action.
